Hiking Mt. Coropuna

In Chuquibamba, Peru our home for children hiked the tallest and largest volcano in Peru:  Nevado Coropuna, sitting at 6377 m/20922 ft.

The base of the volcano is only about a half-hour drive from the home in Chuquibamba. To hike to the top from the base camp takes 2-3 days, but the views and short hikes around the volcano kept everyone enthused. Coropuna, which comes from the Quechua coro meaning “cut off at the top” and puna meaning “a cold, snowy height.”

Getting out of doors after a year inside and getting out to a mountain meant smiles and memories and an exhausting but welcome kind of rest in the beauty of creation.
